Mrs. Kostal's art class is for grades K-5. We meet for one hour a week at Garfield Primary and Grant-White Intermediate Schools.
Fifth grade turned these old instruments into ART! The idea was based on the 1999 installation in Chicago called “Cows on Parade.” Artists were commissioned to design and decorate over 300 cows that checkered the entire city of Chicago. Each one represented a unique theme or style.
Fifth grade started “Instruments on Parade” by choosing themes and media for each instrument. Each class brainstormed as many ideas as possible. A ballot was put together and the classes voted on what theme and media they would like each instrument to have.
Once the votes were cast, the instruments were primed and sketches were made on how they envisioned the final product.
Students from all three fifth grades worked collaboratively on drawing, painting, and sculpting each instrument.
It was a beautiful team effort!
The night of the Festival of the Arts, the instruments were raffled off. Everyone was welcome to place a raffle ticket in front of each work of art for their chance to take it home. Spongebob seemed to be one of the most popular, with even our Superintendent going for the chance!

The Architecture center is a favorite. The kids always want me to take pictures of their creations before they get put away. Here is a collection of awesome structures.

The 2013 Festival of the Arts was fantastic last night and I have a whole bunch of wonderful pictures to share soon! Thanks to everyone for the enjoyable evening.
Second grade finished their dolls today. We studied the Hopi Native American Kachina dolls, but made ours all our own. They turned out great. I let them take them home right way, but not before capturing some pix.
We haven’t had “center time” for a few weeks at Garfield school, so the recyclables gave been building up in the sculpture center. Second graders used their 10 minutes today to work collaboratively on a giant sculpture that used just about every thing over there! They were very proud of their efforts and had lots of fun piecing it together.
The Gallery Night at the Forest Park library was a success! Thanks to Susan Kunkle and the Youth Department for hosting Forest Parks’ north side artists.
All art will be on display the rest of the month in the lower level Youth Department.

I hope all the families had a wonderful time enjoying the artwork at the Forest Park Library. I did make it there… After an hour and fifteen minute rainy drive. I was very upset that I didn’t get to see the faces of our beaming artists.
